Pressure Gauges: Use Them!

Recently there was a sad story near my hometown. A house in an affluent neighborhood burned down. Everything in the house was destroyed before the fire department could get there. Insurance will surely cover the loss of items that can be replaced. For items that cannot be replacing, there are only tears.

How did this happen? This home had a sprinkler system.

The preliminary investigation showed there was no water in the sprinkler lines.

This is tragic.

How the home owner to know there was no water in the sprinkler lines? Quite simply: looking at a pressure gauge.

To be sure, not every place a pressure gauge can be used is it as matter of house and home. Nevertheless, how many manufacturing plants and processes would benefit from a few pressure gauges strategically placed where there is not one now? How much time is lost to go around the corner or look up form repair or maintenance work, just to see what the pressure in the line is?

Pressure gauges are ubiquitous. They are readily available and very cost effective. Their availability from off shore sources further lowers the cost of ownership and makes it all the more sense to put them in line regularly.

Evaluate the cost of a pump running dry and the damage that can cause to both the pump and to downstream equipment, versus the cost of four or five pressure gauges and the point becomes clear.

In processes where end product can be ruined without timely rinse, knowing there is water, or whatever rinsing fluid that will be used, in the line is very valuable.

In semiconductor manufacturing, leaving etching chemical on a wafer too long can damage or ruin the wafer. It is good to know there is DI water pressure in the line, before it is required.

All process lines are there for a reason. The availability of the fluid in those lines I crucial to the manufacturing process. Adding pressure gauges to these lines is an easy and cost effective way to make sure that fluid will be available for dispensing when it is required. Add them as needed and worry about something else.
